Famed Fukuoka chain serves pork-free ramen to G-20 delegates

Video footage shows representatives for the Group of 20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors in Fukuoka sampling a pork-free version of “tonkotsu ramen” (pork bone broth ramen), one of the city’s signature dishes, at a reception on June 8. Ichiran, a nationwide chain founded in the city, served 200 half-size portions each of the tonkotsu ramen and the alternative prepared with beef-chicken broth. But some Muslim guests did not touch the pork-free ramen because beef and chicken were not certified as meeting halal standards. Gyoten, a sushi restaurant in Fukuoka awarded three stars in a Michelin guide, also provided vegetable-only pieces along with regular sushi.
