Protesters hold anti-fascist rally in central Athens

ATHENS, GREECE - OCTOBER 09: An anti-fascist rally took place Saturday afternoon in central Athens, Omonia square where thousands of demonstrators marched after a call from leftist parties, student associations and leftist affiliated unions, with a key message to stop the escalation of fascist violence.During the course of the rally, police forces asked protestors to move on one lane of the street in order not to block traffic, local media reported.According to media sources, police used tear gas in order to control the crowds, which provoked the reaction of demonstrators, including Former Finance minister with left wing Syriza party Euclid Tsakalotos.Later, Tsakalotos in a personal tweet said: “what is happening at the moment is unacceptable. One year after the Golden Dawn conviction, a large anti-fascist march is blocked by the police while chemicals are used for no reason."Tsakalotos continued his tweet saying that he went to the police chief asking him who had ordered this, without getting a reply.“The government's treatment of the people who fight fascism is indicative of its tolerance of the snake’s egg," he stated.(Footage by Derya Gulnaz Ozcan/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
