Supporters of the President of Ecuador Rafael Correa are dispersed with tear gas by renegade police officers, in the surroundings of Quito's police hospital where the president has sought refuge as rebel troops and police were staging a coup, after seizing the main airport and storming Congress in a mutiny over pay cuts on September 30, 2010. Ecuador was plunged into crisis Thursday as Air Force troops seized the main airport and police stormed the Congress, forcing the government to declare a state of emergency and denounce an attempted coup. The country's military chief ordered renegade police to end an uprising against the government and surrender, as the country was thrown into turmoil by the crisis. Ecuador's international airport reopened late Thursday after being briefly taken over by troops protesting government paycuts, Mayor Augusto Barrera said.
