In the Roman army, a signifer was a standard-bearer who carried the signum or signa, which was a military standard that served as a rallying point and symbol of the unit's identity. Each century, a subdivision of a Roman legion consisting of 80 to 100 men, had its own signifer who was responsible for carrying and protecting the signum.
