Gonorrhoea infection in male, computer illustration. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Gram-negative bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In males, N. gonorrhoeae causes urethritis with the main symptoms urethral discharge and a burning sensation on urination. Neisseria often hide inside neutrophils (incomplete phagocytosis) evading the immune response, leading to chronic recurrent infections.
