ANATOMY of the SKIN--EPIDERMIS, DERMIS and SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER (or HYPODERMIS). 40X The epidermis shows several layers including a thick stratum corneum (keratinized or horny layer). A dark stratum granulosum is also evident and a coiled sweat gland duct. The dermis is composed of irregular fibrous connective tissue with an abundance of collagenous fibers. A sweat gland duct is also evident. The subcutaneous layer shows a large aggregation of fat cells (Adipose tissue) and three PACINIAN CORPUSCLES (pressure receptors that are stimulated by heavy pressure and vibrations).
