This image shows four layers and includes: Stratum Corneum (keratinized, protective layer), Stratum Granulosum (dark layer with dark granules), Stratum Spinosum (many layers of cells), and the Stratum Basale (basal or germinitive layer also called Stratum Germinitivum). The Basal Layer is dark and contains dark cells called Melanocytes--cells that produce a protective pigment called Melanin. The Dermis is the pink colored area under the basal layer. The epidermis is stratified squamous epithelium.
