AERIAL: HI-SEAS Mission 3 - Simulating Long Duration Mars Missions Here On Earth

The Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) Mission 3 is part of a human performance study funded by NASA. As part of this study, 6 participants are living in a dome in Hawaii for 8 months (starting October 2014), completely cut off from the outside world, save for communications on a 20 min delay to simulate the communication delay between Earth and a spacecraft heading to Mars. This mission is twice as long as any previously completed at the Hawaiʻi site, and second only to Russia’s Mars500 experiment in total duration. The MDRS is equipped with biology and geology laboratories. There is also a telescope the crew will be able to access. The Hawaii habitat has a small laboratory which will have facilities for bench-top microbiology with non-pathogenic micro-organisms, for examining geological samples, and for simple chemistry work such as use of water testing kits. It can also provide a private, relatively quiet area for non-invasive biomedical testing such as blood pressure measurements, smelling acuity tests, and computerized cognitive testing.
