Colombia is looking into the disappearances of two young women while Van Der Sloot was there. Aruba and the US are waiting to see if new information might emerge to solve the Natalee Holloway case. EJ 09:11:57 (:09) INT WASHINGTON, DC MS: Twitty speaks at a podium for a press conference at the Natalee Holloway Resource Center. Fox News Contributor Bo Dietl joins Natalie Morales live in Studio 1A. NATALIE MORALES: Bo, good morning to you. Mr. BO DIETL: Good morning, Natalie. MORALES: I guess the big fundamental question here is why was Joran van der Sloot allowed to leave Peru with $10,000 cash, $15,000, money wired into his account? Now as I understand, the FBI doesn't have arrest jurisdiction outside of the US. Is that right? Mr. DIETL: Let's go from the beginning, first of all. John Kelly, the lawyer, was contacted again. He had a communication with e-mails back and forth. What Joran van der Sloot said that this father had died and he wants--wanted the Holloway family to find out where he'd buried the daughter. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Mr. DIETL: So the communication was back and forth. John and I spoke about it, then we talked about bringing the FBI in. They were contacted in the Alabama office. They went and contacted the Aruban authorities. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Mr. DIETL: Now there was a cooperation that was done. It's a two-party state--two-party country on communication, eavesdropping and that. They got a warrant that they were able to put cameras in the room and record what was going on. The 10,000 was exchanged, the wire transfer for 15,000 was sent to the Netherlands. So you have two charges there. You have extortion and you have wire fraud. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Mr. DIETL: But also, he makes an incriminating statement in that room of how he killed Natalee Holloway. MORALES: Which proved not to be true, right? Mr. DIETL: Well, the point is, he makes that statement... MORALES: Right. Mr. DIETL: ...on tape which was videotaped. Now the Aruban authorities were present during this whole thing with the FBI. They were privy to this. Why didn't the Aruban authorities under their law--just on suspicion they could have held him on 180 days. My thing is you can blame all... MORALES: So they dropped the ball. Mr. DIETL: I think you can keep blaming the FBI but I think the real blame is this is in Aruba. The Aruban government was involved. They see him making an admission to killing this girl. Now, this is new evidence. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Mr. DIETL: They should have taken him down on that. And then obviously the FBI there has extortion and wire fraud again. The ball was dropped, but my real fear is how many other people this guy killed. This guy's... MORALES: I mean, now we understand that the FBI's looking into cases of two women at casinos in Colombia. Do you believe this guy's a serial killer? You have said, check his passport. Mr. DIETL: I've said it before. Now the FBI should join up with Interpol, find out where he was. He was in Thailand, he was all over the place, where missing girls are, where murdered girls are. This guy, again, they found those pills in the car, the rape--the date rape drugs... MORALES: Date rape drugs. Mr. DIETL: ...were found in that car, of Flores' car. This guy's MO was he puts these date rape drugs, has his way. If they don't cooperate, then he uses violence. This is a murderer. I met him, I looked in his eyes. MORALES: And you as a private investigator have been working on this case for a long time. And as I understand, Natalee Holloway's mother, Beth Twitty, was in Washington, DC, this week, and I know John Kelly, who you work with, her attorney, met with her. Given all of this, how is she doing? How is she holding up, knowing this? Mr. DIETL: Let's... MORALES: Is there any hope for closure that this will some back--somehow bring to light what happened to her daughter who disappeared five years ago? Mr. DIETL: Natalie, you're hitting the nail on the head. How this creep could take, after this family lost their daughter, how they could take this and how he could extort 250,000. All this mother wanted was closure to bury his wife***(as spoken). MORALES: Well, it certainly is a case I'm sure we're going to be hearing a lot more details in the days to come about what is going on in the investigation. Bo Dietl, again, thanks so much for your time this morning. Mr. DIETL: Thank you, Natalie. 09:15:57 (3:55) Psychologist Jeff Gardere and People Magazine's Editor Betsy Gleick Discuss the Separation Of Karenna Gore Schiff and Her Husband GFX: Graphic of People Magazine. Psychologist Jeff Gardere and People Magazine Executive Editor Betsy Gleick join Al Roker live in Studio 1A Psychologist Jeff Gardere and People Magazine Executive Editor Betsy Gleick join Al Roker live in Studio 1A AL ROKER: Good morning to both of you. Dr. JEFF GARDERE: Good morning. Ms. BETSY GLEICK: Hi, Al. ROKER: You know, this is--when you heard about Al and Tipper Gore, I mean, everybody--it sent shock waves through everybody. I mean, here's this solid marriage. Not quite the same with Karenna and her husband? Ms. GLEICK: It's not quite the same because they're public figures, but way less so than Al and Tipper. And the marriage was much briefer. ROKER: And do we think, Jeff, and of course we don't know and only the Gores know... Dr. GARDERE: Sure. ROKER: ...would these marriages, this break--these breakups be related? Dr. GARDERE: It could be related, because Al and Tipper's marriage, 40 years, they were setting an example for everyone else. It was almost like the anchor marriage. Once that one goes away, then the weaker marriages or the more recent marriages then tend to fall apart because they can't depend on Al and Tipper anymore to be that couple who can give them the advice... ROKER: Mm-hmm. Dr. GARDERE: ...or set that example of, you know, stick with it and stay strong. ROKER: You can--you can work through this. Dr. GARDERE: We hope that they are the examples to tell them that they could still work through it, even though they have divorced. ROKER: Mm-hmm. Dr. GARDERE: Because they've been there. They have 40 years of experience, even though they ended up splitting up after that time. ROKER: Betsy, from what you've learned, are--have Al and Tipper been with Karenna since this has all been announced? Ms. GLEICK: Yes. Al and Tipper have both been to New York to visit Karenna. Everybody is being mutually supportive. And there is a lot of talk of counseling and therapy and Al and Tipper have spoken about being in therapy in the past. ROKER: Mm-hmm. Ms. GLEICK: So everybody really is trying to work this out as amicably as possible. ROKER: I mean, they have been the example because they've been through a lot. Ms. GLEICK: Yes. Dr. GARDERE: Sure. ROKER: From the near-death of a child, we've seen all of that. So, which I guess, Jeff, makes it that much more surprising. Dr. GARDERE: Yeah, it does make it surprising. But I think the thing that we have to look at is people have longer life spans now, and so where we never saw couples who have 40 years in really splitting up in that way, now we see that they're starting to do it. At 61 and 62 years old... ROKER: Mm-hmm. Dr. GARDERE: ...they can go on and have rich lives separately. But the thing, Al, we have to look at is Al and Tipper Gore are not failures because they divorced. ROKER: Because that's this general consensus. Dr. GARDERE: Exactly. ROKER: Oh, this marriage failed, but it's been 40 years. Dr. GARDERE: They--the marriage may not have worked out but it doesn't mean that they're failures as people. ROKER: Hm. Dr. GARDERE: The fact that they're having an amicable divorce says to me that they really are sterling people. Divorce is not a bad word. ROKER: Mm-hmm. Dr. GARDERE: Sometimes people just do have to end it in order to be more fulfilled in their lives. ROKER: And, Betsy, their middle daughter, has been divorced as well, correct? Ms. GLEICK: That is true. Yes. So... Dr. GARDERE: She divorced in 2009. Ms. GLEICK: Right. Dr. GARDERE: Yes. ROKER: So what does that--can we draw anything from this? Ms. GLEICK: I don't think so. We don't really know privately what's going on behind the scenes. I think these are three possibly sad, possibly not sad situations. ROKER: Mm-hmm. Dr. GARDERE: I think--I think what we possibly draw from this, these are very famous people. They have very public lives and they have a lot going on all the time. I mean, they have to balance family with work with media with all of these great projects they're involved in. And sometimes that takes time away from one another and they just drift apart. ROKER: OK. And quickly, the Gore Schiffs have three children. So we're talking about the divorce of their parents and their grandparents. What does that do to grandchildren? Dr. GARDERE: Well, I think for the grandchildren perhaps they may not have the sterling example in their minds that marriage is something that lasts forever. They may see that marriages are a little bit more disposable or maybe in their particular family, marriages don't really turn out so well. So I don't think they're getting the healthiest view of marriage because of what's happened. ROKER: All right, Jeff Gardere, Betsy Gleick, thank you so much. Dr. GARDERE: Thank you. Ms. GLEICK: Thanks. 09:23:15 (3:30) Make-a-Wish Foundation of America's Bonnie Gwin Discusses the Organization's 30th Anniversary Make-a-Wish Foundation of America's Board Chair Bonnie Gwin and some Make-a-Wish children and their parents Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Al Roker live outside Studio 1A.
