Senator Sasse Floor Remarks on Gorsuch Sentiments Meeting with Senators

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse remarks on a news controversy after meetings between Senators and Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch, saying that he believes in a constitutional system that has limits and defending your own branch is not to attack another branch. Sasse says he happened to have the breast pocket card in his suit when he met with the judge, reading some of his notes from the meeting. Sasse says that Gorsuch got a little bit emotional and he said that any attack or any criticism of his brothers and sisters of the robe is an attack or a criticism on everybody wearing the robe as a judge, that it is incredibly disheartening to hear things that might undermine the credibility and the independence of the judiciary, and that it is completely legitimate for all of us to vigorously debate individual opinions. Sasse says that members of the Senate ought to want its powers limited because it is fundamentally American to be skeptical of the consolidation of power. Sasse argues that there are some on the other side of the aisle who decided they want to reflexively attack Gorsuch, which he says is like Keystone cops running around trying to figure out which story you want to label it with, such as that Gorsuch is a puppet or that he rented a plane from President Donald Trump. Sasse says that must get past reflexive partisanship in the Gorsuch is someone who believes in three separate but equal branches and is skeptical of the consolidation of power because he understands why America has limited government, the kind of person to be celebrated for having been nominated to the court.
