I can't believe it's August 1st, but there's good news. We hopefully have some sort of a deal down and we'll watch. Very... HODA KOTB, co-host: In Washington. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: Yes. You know what? GIFFORD: With bated breath. KOTB: See, as we lounge on the beach, the deal is coming together. Why were we sweating about anything? On Monday, it looks like things are going well. GIFFORD: OK. KOTB: So we'll see. HODA KOTB, co-host: But we had some fun this weekend. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD, co-host: We just can't stop hanging out together, Hoda woman. KOTB: We had a double event, it was a double-whammy in the Hamptons, OK? We were in Southampton early on Saturday... GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: ...and by early, we mean 3:00 in the afternoon. GIFFORD: Three o'clock in the afternoon. KOTB: And we did a book signing. That's me and Kath in front of Jennifer Miller's jewelry store. GIFFORD: Yeah. And thanks to everybody that came out to see us. KOTB: That was so... GIFFORD: You know, I expected maybe five grandmas to get my book for their grandchildren. KOTB: OK, it looks like--look at Mark, that's Jen's husband--it looks like no one's there. What's the story here? GIFFORD: There were--there were lots of people and it was very nice. And there's Jay! Jay's in on everything now. KOTB: There's Jen. GIFFORD: Jennifer, what a doll she is. KOTB: Sweetheart, what a sweetheart and what a cute baby that Nick is. GIFFORD: What a great store she's got there, too. KOTB: Very nice. GIFFORD: I left with a few items that are... KOTB: Yes, you did that you happen to be wearing. GIFFORD: Yes. Yes, and I have no intention of returning. KOTB: At all. GIFFORD: They're just great. And then that night... KOTB: All right--yep. GIFFORD: ...we barely had time to... KOTB: Change... GIFFORD: ...change. KOTB: ...and get a blowout. GIFFORD: Well, unfortunately I had time to get--I had no time to do my hair and you'll see why in a second. KOTB: All right, so we went to a breast cancer event called HEAT. It's a benefit for the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center in Southampton. The honorees were Kathie Lee, Kim Cattrall... GIFFORD: And Hoda Kotb. KOTB: ...me and Rosanna Scotto emceed it. It was a fun event. There were lots of people came out under that--under that tent. GIFFORD: There were--there were tons of people. KOTB: Yeah, and it was really sweet. GIFFORD: Wow, look at my hair. It looks like your pictures, Hoda. KOTB: Careful. OK. GIFFORD: Yeah. Yeah. KOTB: And we got these beautiful bowls that were there. And it was just a great--it was a really nice event and we raised a lot of money. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: You did because you made that man pay 10 grand for a lunch with us. GIFFORD: That's right. That's right. KOTB: She went for it in the audience. Like `you,' and the guy raised his hand. And now he has to eat--he has to pay $10,000 for lunch. GIFFORD: Hey. Well, also because Kim Cattrall is going to be on Broadway this fall... KOTB: Oh yeah. GIFFORD: ...in "Private Lives." KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: And so we said, `You know what, you come with us on theater day.' KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: `We'll have lunch, go to see Kim.' KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: `And raise some money for a good cause.' KOTB: You know what, she's such a sweet person, by the way. GIFFORD: Yeah, I really like her. KOTB: Wow. GIFFORD: Cass said to me when I was going, she goes, `Mom, are you really going to be with Kim Cattrall? I love her!' KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: And I went, `Why?' You know, I mean, you know. KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: And the other thing I said to Cass, because she's in Europe with her friend's family and everything. And I said, `If you run into any of our friends, any of my friends there, you know, say hello.' And I said--she said, `Who, ma?' KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: I said, `Oh, you know, Harvey Weinstein.' KOTB: Yeah, he goes. GIFFORD: We ran into Harvey Weinstein... KOTB: Yeah, we did. GIFFORD: ...at Bridgehampton Saturday night. KOTB: We did. GIFFORD: Hey. I think I was... KOTB: We both were. GIFFORD: We were a little... KOTB: It was fun. Anyhoo, all right. So there's... GIFFORD: Forget no kids allowed, no co-hosts should be allowed... KOTB: No, no. Not us. GIFFORD: ...someplace. KOTB: We want to apologize. GIFFORD: Mm-hmm. KOTB: OK, anyway, so there is a new trend that's getting out there and it's called no kids allowed. GIFFORD: Like brat bans. KOTB: It's happening in restaurants. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: In some restaurants they're not allowing kids. And movie theaters. GIFFORD: They're talking about it on airplanes. KOTB: Yeah, certain things. So the question is, do you think that's--I guess it would depend on if it were good business for the establishment. If the restaurant's going to make money by not allowing kids in... GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: ...they'd probably do it. It wouldn't make sense for a family... GIFFORD: A place like Applebee's or Cracker Barrel, of course... KOTB: Yeah, sure, sure. GIFFORD: ...is always going to have--you expect to see kids there. KOTB: What do you think of the idea of having certain--you know, it's kind of like... GIFFORD: I can't generalize because, you know, some kids I don't--I don't ever want to see again as long as I live. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: They're so badly, you know, behaved. Other kids are so great, they're a delight to be around. KOTB: You're right, it's about the kids. GIFFORD: So it's about the kids. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: And more importantly, it's about the parents who don't parent. As a result, nobody wants to be in that restaurant because they're running amok and going all over the place and... KOTB: Yeah, I do--I do think it's weird when the kid goes running through the restaurant and the parents just kind of keeps an eye out to see where he or she is going. GIFFORD: Yeah, yeah. KOTB: Yeah, I do think--but there is something that's sometimes nice. Like you know when it's--remember when it was adult swim hours and all the kids had to get out of the pool? So you could actually enjoy the swimming pool. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: And then they had certain hours where there were kids. I kind of get it. But some theaters are saying that they are banning kids under six. And that would be hard because there are a lot of good movies for kids out there. GIFFORD: I'm sorry, but I think teenagers are worst behaved in movies than some six-year-olds. KOTB: Yeah, yeah. And some grown-ups, by the way. GIFFORD: Yeah, when their cell--I can't talk after mine went off the other day in the theater. KOTB: You're still thinking about it. GIFFORD: I'm so sick about that because, you know, I make a thing about that. KOTB: And you said you turned it off and somehow magically it wasn't off. GIFFORD: No, it--there's a short in my phone and I have to take it to Verizon... KOTB: No, I'm... GIFFORD: ...and have it fixed. KOTB: I'm not--I'm not saying that's not true. GIFFORD: What part of that don't you understand? KOTB: Right, I know, it had nothing to do with not turning it off, it's a short. GIFFORD: You saw me turn it off. KOTB: It's a short circuit. GIFFORD: Oh, my gosh! KOTB: I know. Some phones have short... GIFFORD: I'm going--I'm going to get Sunny on. How do you know, you're stretched out there on the aisle with your legs and trying to bring in your bowling ball and everything? KOTB: I know. If we can bring the guy from Verizon to come on the air and tell me that was a short circuit, then I'll believe it. GIFFORD: Yes, let's do it! KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: I would say all sounds off, close it and the next thing you do, you open it up and it says sound high. KOTB: High. OK? All right. All right, so here's a question for you. When you're out to dinner, you finish eating and you know you have to put--your lipstick has vanished. GIFFORD: Yeah, you ate it. KOTB: You ate it. So the question is, do you reapply at the table or do you go to the bathroom... GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: ...and reapply? GIFFORD: Yes. Yes, you don't--you don't reline your eyes and, you know... KOTB: Right, but you put more lipstick on. GIFFORD: ...put on more mascara. I think that's always been acceptable. Now our friend Philip from The New York Times.. KOTB: Phil Galanes says--yeah. GIFFORD: ...says yes, when dining out with other couples it is rude for women to reapply makeup at the table. KOTB: Well, he doesn't... GIFFORD: He's not a woman. KOTB: He doesn't get it. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: No, I think it's fine. I think it's fine to do it. I do, sometimes if I'm with a boss or somebody, I'm uncomfortable doing it, I'll be honest. I don't do it then. GIFFORD: I do. KOTB: You do. GIFFORD: Yes, I had lunch with our new CEO... KOTB: And you were slathering it on? GIFFORD: Five times. KOTB: You did? GIFFORD: Wanted him looking at those lips, baby. KOTB: Was he? GIFFORD: That's right. KOTB: That's...(unintelligible). GIFFORD: No, he never checked them out once, but. KOTB: All right, here's some creepy video. Imagine you're driving in your car, you're going 65 miles an hour like this lady in Memphis was and suddenly she notices not a little garter snake or a whatever snake, a big old honking snake like that on the car slithering around. GIFFORD: Oh my gosh. KOTB: Her husband's videotaping while she's driving. It comes around the rear-view mirror. GIFFORD: Oh. KOTB: Wants to get in so badly. Now I don't know why it couldn't crawl up underneath some of the apparatus and get in the car because it must have come up from the engine or somewhere. GIFFORD: What was--it's on the outside, though, right? KOTB: But can't things crawl in from under? GIFFORD: In through your exhaust pipe and stuff? KOTB: I don't know, somewhere. It's creepy, that. It did fall off the car apparently. They just kept driving till it fell off. GIFFORD: It became road kill. KOTB: Ew! GIFFORD: Don't you think? KOTB: That is terrible. GIFFORD: Well... KOTB: They could have stopped and pulled over. GIFFORD: Oh, oh, right. KOTB: What? They could have done that. GIFFORD: Right, right, right. OK. KOTB: Yeah, exactly. GIFFORD: Now we have some favorite things, don't we? KOTB: We certainly do. GIFFORD: This is not my favorite thing, but there's a story behind it. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: This is called Dream Water, OK? And I had had it before, somebody had sent it to me and I liked it. I liked it. KOTB: It has, by the way, tryptophan in it, the... GIFFORD: And melatonin. KOTB: ...and melatonin. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: From turkey. GIFFORD: So we stayed at Donny Deutsch's beautiful home in Bridgehampton over the weekend. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: And I'm--thank you, Donny, for your incredible hospitality to us. KOTB: Yeah, it was a great spot. GIFFORD: Gorgeous house. Five forty-five in the morning I'm up and I said `I'm going to go--I'm going to go walk on the beach,' because it was just glorious. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: Thinking I'll run into Hoda woman because she run... KOTB: I usually get up early, early. GIFFORD: I get back at 7 and Hoda and Jay are like...(eyes shut and moaning). KOTB: Bleary-eyed. GIFFORD: Anyway, it's because they had Dream Water the night before. KOTB: That's what it was, it was Dream Water. That Dream Water has tryptophan and it's like eating a turkey dinner. GIFFORD: And also blueberries and pomegranate. KOTB: And you just are conked out. And it works in 30 minutes. You take it, you drink it, and good night, Irene. It's over. It's over. GIFFORD: Anyway, if you have some trouble sleeping all I can say is I saw two people that could not... KOTB: No. We were in comas. GIFFORD: You were. It was unbelievable. KOTB: It was weird. All right, so this is... GIFFORD: OK. KOTB: ...a--OK, Spanx has done it again. All right, they have--first of all they have Spanx bras obviously and the Spanx. They have Spanx bathing suits. Now they have... GIFFORD: Spanx pants. KOTB: ...Spanx activewear. It's the kind you wear in the gym. Look! It's the pants with the tummy control item. GIFFORD: Control. Oh boy. KOTB: Because sometimes the workout pants, they're too low. You want them to cover your belly. GIFFORD: Yeah. You don't have any belly, Hoda. KOTB: Yes, I do, and that works. GIFFORD: I saw you at poolside. KOTB: Isn't that great? GIFFORD: Yeah, how much do they cost, Hoda woman? KOTB: Anyway, they cost a certain amount of money. I don't know. You can get them on spanx.com. Or I think Neiman Marcus has them. And I think they're about 100 bucks. They're expensive, but they're like those lululemon pants. GIFFORD: And, you know, they hold up well in the wash, too. KOTB: But--yeah, but they keep your tummy tucked in just tight. GIFFORD: I'm in, I'm in. Sara has a favorite thing. SARA HAINES reporting: Yeah. If you wear those you don't need to work out. KOTB: Exactly. HAINES: Done and done. KOTB: Ha, ha. HAINES: OK, I've got a fan favorite. This is from Dana from Norristown, Pennsylvania. These are called Nano Tech Facial Cloths. KOTB: What are they? HAINES: They're really soft and you'd rather than using tons of makeup remover, you just keep using them. It's a green eco thing. KOTB: Oh. HAINES: And they're really soft on your face. You can get them on amazon.com for about $25. It's a full set. KOTB: I like that. I like that a lot. HAINES: Be green, be green. KOTB: Very nice. GIFFORD: OK. I'm trying to figure that out. But all right. KOTB: Uh-huh. All righty. GIFFORD: All right. This is of course the beginning of the month and every month we have our new EVERYONE HAS A STORY winner. And today...(clip of Gifford singing "Everyone Has a Story")...let's stop for a moment and listen. KOTB: We always do. GIFFORD: Ah, anyway, there's nothing like the sound of my voice. Anyway, the winner is Mary Kay Dyer. She's on the phone with her daughter, Marissa, who wrote in to us. KOTB: Oh. GIFFORD: Hi. Ms. MARY KAY DYER (Saginaw, Michigan): Hello. Ms. MARISSA OLLECH (Aurora, Colorado): Hi. GIFFORD: Hi, ladies. KOTB: Hi, guys. How are you? GIFFORD: Mary, are you finding out just now that you're the winner? Ms. DYER: No, actually your producer was very kind and gracious and told us a few days ago so I could pack appropriately. KOTB: Oh. GIFFORD: That's right, because you have a little more trouble traveling these days, don't you? Ms. DYER: It just takes a little bit more time. KOTB: Tell us what happened, yeah. GIFFORD: Yeah, Mary was in a car accident, a devastating car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. KOTB: Hm. GIFFORD: She went through rehab with the most unbelievably positive attitude. She works as a full--she works full-time as a children's pastor... KOTB: Oh, how sweet. GIFFORD: ...and says that she--now she says the blessing of this is she says I can be eye-to-eye level now with the kids. KOTB: Yeah, that's... GIFFORD: So, I mean, talk about seeing the world--the glass half-full. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: So she plays wheelchair tennis, Hoda woman. KOTB: Hi. GIFFORD: Drives her own hand-controlled van and... KOTB: Wow. GIFFORD: ...I was so moved by her--the letter. It was beautifully, beautifully written. So we have a trip in store to New York for you ladies. KOTB: We can't wait to see you. GIFFORD: And we'll see you on Thursday. Ms. DYER: We're so excited. GIFFORD: Awesome. Thanks so much for writing in, Marissa. KOTB: All right, Mary Kay, we'll see you soon. GIFFORD: God bless you. Have a safe trip. Ms. OLLECH: That's great. Thank you. We can't wait to meet you guys. GIFFORD: Same here, sweetie, thank you. KOTB: That's sweet. GIFFORD: Very sweet. KOTB: Sweet, sweet, sweet. GIFFORD: Yep, yep, yep. That's the end for many, many people. They go through something so devastating and Marissa was saying, `Yeah, for our family it seemed like it was, but it was our mom's attitude that we'... KOTB: Wow, wow. GIFFORD: ...`said, "no, it's just the beginning of something really incredibly and--incredible and new."' KOTB: I love that. GIFFORD: All righty. KOTB: Let's talk to Miss Sara. Let's see what's cookin' over there. Hey, girl. HAINES: I wanted to remind everyone about our big thing this week. It's just two days away, the biggest Zumba class ever to be held in New York City. If you want to join in on the fun, throw on your workout gear and come on down, just go to klgandhoda.com for details and to sign up. Don't forget to sign up. The early bird catches the worm, so you'll have to be here at 7 AM, and don't forget Zumba creator Beto will be here to lead the class. KOTB: That, by the way... GIFFORD: He's like a rock star, right? Elvis. KOTB: The Twitter world is crazy about Zumba and Beto. They're like on it. They keep going, `I can't wait,' `I'm planning my outfit.' Like they are on it. So we're ready for you. GIFFORD: All righty, up next..."
