Conservative Party Conference: Boris Johnson speech; Boris Johnson speech continued SOT - and that's why we've reformed the London Development Agency / we have transformed it from a weird dodgy grant to dodgy causes into a heavyweight and credible organisation, focussing on jobs, skills and economic growth / and these must be our priorities because meet at time of growing economic anxiety / its as though Captain Bush has come over intercom and one of wheels of capitalism has mysteriously failed and passengers asked to remain in seats...is alarm in cabin / there is justifiable fury at some of the bankers who flogged these mortgages, but worries me when I hear a Labour gov't that inflated the bubble that stoked the debt...suddenly deciding it would be popular to punish the capitalists and bring in new regulations to fetter the banks / don't believe best way of protecting hardworking mortgage holders of London is to launch vindictive attack on one of most successful industries in this country (applause) CUTAWAY Audience applauding Johnson continuing SOT - no matter how much you may resent those masters of the universe, there are plenty of other parts of the universe that would welcome them and the jobs they bring - lawyers, accountants, cleaners...who ultimately depend on the wealth they create - I say to the Labour government you will not make this capital and country more competitive by driving away talent / cannot regulate your way out of a recession but you can regulate your way into one (applause) - the best thing we can do when times are tough is help ordinary people in every way you can / we are scrapping 25 pound charge that was going to fall on ordinary family vehicles and encouraging firms across London to follow our example and pay London living wage / are extending cut price travel for those on income support - helping millions who can't get mortgage by pushing ahead with innovative 'first step' scheme using land available to GLA for...
