UNITED KINGDOM - JULY 12: Advertisement for the Supermarine Aviation Works, which manufactured the seaplanes which won the Schneider Trophy on four occasions, in 1922, 1927, 1929, and 1931. The Schneider Trophy race was one of the earliest contests for pilots. The race, sponsored by Jacques Schneider, was intended to encourage seaplane development. The event led to many pioneering innovations in aircraft design and engine power. The design of the Spitfire fighter plane evolved directly from the Supermarine S6, for example. Twelve contests were held between 1913 and 1931 in England, Italy, France and the United States. The 1931 event took place at Calshot, near Southampton, on 12th September and was won by a Supermarine S6B piloted by John Boothman. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
