Western Cape Farmers Face Worsening Drought Conditions And Water Restricitions
MELKBOOM, SOUTH AFRICA - FEBRUARY 7, 2018: Wayne and Chanti, farmers in the Western Cape, had to let their 34,000 cucumber plants inside their greenhouses go this year because they don"u2019t have enough water for them because of water restrictions due to the current drought. When asked about the consequences of the current drought Wayne said, ""It's difficult to measure because we've never seen something like this before." "n"nThough they still have grapes and tomatoes growing, they have had to let go half of their permanent staff because they don"u2019t have enough work for them. To make up for the lost income they decided to start an alternative tourist business on their farm called Nama Bike Camp catering to motorcyclists. They are planning to repurpose the greenhouses to use in the camp. (Photo by Morgana Wingard/Getty Images)
