(Original Caption) This three-picture sequence shows the action in Saturday's special race at Los Angeles Coliseum in which Jim Bailey of Australia outraced world-record holder John Landy, a fellow Australian, to run the first mile under four minutes in the United States. Bailey's time was 3:58.6 six-tenths of a second more than Landy's 1954 world record. Left: Bailey (#2) as he started to sprint past Landy.
