The Murambi Memorial: In Memory of the Rwanda Genocide

The exhumation of bodies began in May 1997 when a team of 20 Rwandans, under the supervision of a specialist from Chile, selected 26,000 corpses from the skeletons and skulls. The corpses were then cleaned and covered with quicklime to preserve them as they were at the moment of death, three years previously. They were then delicately placed, one by one, in the classrooms of the Murambi school. The Murambi memorial leaves the visitor with an overwhelming feeling of intimacy, as if each victim wanted to remind the living of their contribution to humanity. | Location: Gikongoro, Rwanda.
