ETH: Danakil Salt Mining
ARMADHILA, DANAKIL DEPRESSION, ETHIOPIA - DECEMBER 2007: The Danakil Depression is the hottest place on earth, with temperatures reaching 63 degrees Celcius (145 degrees Fahrenheit). This desert is more than 100 meters below sea level. Under these extreme conditions, Ethiopians from the Afar and Tigray ethnic groups have been crossing the Danakil Desert for several centuries with camel caravans, bound for a salt mine. They travel for five days from Tigray to reach the mine, where they will work for a long and arduous day to bring the precious salt back to Mekele in eastern Tigray. Armadhila village is really nothing more than an isolated camp in the middle of this extreme desert. The mine workers survive there with their families next to a small military camp, with a small restaurant, a shop and a cafe with an old TV. It's the last stop before reaching the mine, and the place where you pay the salt tax on the way back. (Photo by Stephan Gladieu/Getty Images)
