Japanese Olympic Equestrian Shunzo Kido in Cowboy Garb

Shunzo Kido, of the 1932 Japanese Equestrian Olympics Team, dressed in cowboy garb. Shunzo participated in the steeplechase event at the Olympics, and was one jump from a certain victory for the gold medal when he felt his horse go lame. He chose to stop his race there and dismount, sparing his horse's life, rather then complete the race and win. He was later honored with several awards for his humane actions. He and the other foreign equestrian riders trained at the Riviera Country Club in Santa Monica, where the Olympic Equestrian events were held.
