Woman operating a Hoover washing machine and wringer, c 1948.

UNITED KINGDOM - AUGUST 07: Photographic Advertising Limited photograph. This was the first British-made compact machine of its type. It was partly automatic; electricity heated the water and powered a contoured rotating disc, or pulsator, set into the side of the tub. Its other distinctive features included a hand-operated wringer (being used here) which could be folded down into the machine and a hose to remove the water after washing. Photographic Advertising Limited were a British studio specialising in providing stock photographic images of ready-made and generalised subjects suitable for advertising any product. The collection holds photographs in colour and black and white from the1930s through to the early 1960s. The majority of the collection covers the late 1940s and 1950s and is approximately 20,000 images. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
