The Buffer Zone in Nicosia, the Last Divided Capital in Europe.
NICOSIA ,CYPRUS - DECEMBER 28: Panoramic view of The Turkish part of divided capital of Nicosia on December 28, 2023 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The buffer zone also called the Green Line or referred to as the Attila Line named after Turkey's 1974 military intervention, code named Operation Attila extends approximately 180 km across the island. In old Nicosia town it is approximately 3 km in length and varies in width from 3 meter to 250 meter. Its northern and southern limits are the lines where the belligerents stood following the ceasefire of 16 August 1974 as recorded by UNFICYP. The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1964 to quell fighting between Greek and Turkish communities in areas across Cyprus. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Nicosia remains the last divided capital in Europe. (Photo by Athanasios Gioumpasis/Getty Images).
