The Lowering of the Unemployment Rate Among African Americans in North Omaha

OMAHA, NE - MAY 1: On the second day of a weeklong job training program, Angelica Dunn pulls her son, Thomas-Johnathan Czarnikow-Dunn,cq, 1.5 miles toward home after being asked to leave the class during a quiet test-taking time at Metropolitan Community College - Fort Omaha Campus in North Omaha on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, in Omaha, NE. After dropping off her son at the house she shares with her aunt and sometimes her grandmother, she turned and walked more than three miles to the Department of Health and Human Services for a childcare assistance application that she had already filled. No more than a few minutes in the office, she would turn and walk the three miles back to her house. Over the past decade, concentrated efforts by various organizations in Omaha have helped drastically drive down the unemployment rate among African Americans, particularly in North Omaha, which is majority Black. While Donald Trump brags about how he has helped lower the national unemployment rate among Blacks, the city of Omaha has shown how a small group doing targeted employment bootcamps and workshops can help boost statistics with minimal help from the local, state, or federal government.
