Boy Lifting a Curling Stone

Curling stones have become Scotland's unique and booming export. The firm of Andrew Kay and Co. has been in the business since 1860, and at the present factory in Mauchline, Ayrshire, since 1911. The granite for the stones is quarried and rough hewn on Ailsa Crag, in the Firth of Clyde. At Mauchline, they go through the processes of turning, grinding, weighing, dyeing and polishing. The finished stone weighs 40lbs. The photo shows a finished stone, compared with one of the original rough hewn blocks. (Photo by © Hulton-Deutsch Collection/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)
