Rwandan Conflict

GOMA, ZAIRE - 1994: Children orphaned or displaced during the 1994 Rwandan genocide attending an outdoor class in a refugee camp on the northern shore of Lake Kivu in Goma, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), on July 1994. The genocide perpetrated by the Hutu-dominated provisional Rwandan government on the Tutsi population left nearly one million children abandoned or orphaned, more than a million people dead and a displacement of another three million. Many children saw their family members tortured and murdered and half a million girls were raped.
