The Sea of Cortez separates the Baja California Penninsula from the Mexican mainland. The Gulf is one of the most diverse seas on earth, filled with a rich ecosystem that includes many species of both fish and whales. Gray whales migrate here yearly and are a wonder to see in the spring with their calves. Magdalena Bay has operators that run tourist whale watching tours from Puerto Lopez Mateo, in which you ride in a small ponga (boat) and motor beside the many gray whales. These tours spend about two hours motoring around the whales.
