A harbor seal (Phocal vitulina) resting on barnacle-encrusted offshore rocks in the Bering Sea near Medny Island in the Commander Islands, Russia. All of Medny Island is within the Komandorsky Nature Reserve and completely protected. The Commander Islands are located in the Bering Sea east of the Kamchatka Peninsula and are the westernmost extension of the Aleutian Islands (though they are separated from the rest of the chain by several hundred miles)
