A November 2007 photo of recently felled forest areas in the central highlands of Aceh province, Indonesia. Fire has been used to clear the foliage debris leaving stumps in exposed hilly terrain which is now vulnerable to soil erosion. The Sumatran rainforest is protected but unauthorised clearing does occur which diminishes the habitat of tigers, elephants, orangutan and rhinoceros that roam these mountains.
