Suswa is a sacred place for the Maasai community and is made up of an extinct volcano and cave systems. Maasai in Kenya believe that the inner crater is god's dwelling place. Maasai pray in the caves during ceremonies and for the sick, sometimes using burning olive tree branches if they do not have modern torches. Jeremiah now teaches Maasai youth about the area and traditions in the hope that they will keep practices, which alive. The spread of christianity and modern practices has changed maasai traditions like sacrifice of livestock. Suswa is not on the typical tourist trail and as such has suffered even more after recent insecurity in the country forced many International countries to issue travel advisories against parts of Kenya.
