The French stock market plunged by 4.27 percent in early trading on September 12, 2011, and shares in BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole and Societe Generale banks were down by about 10.0 percent, after the CAC 40 already fell 3.60 percent on Friday. In a bid to reassure markets, Societe Generale announced on Monday before markets opened that it was accelerating its selling of undesirable shares while excluding raising any new capital.
