China - Religion - Nanputuo Temple in Xiamen

A small bridge on a lake inside the botanical garden near the Nanputuo Temple in Xiamen. The Nanputuo Temple is located on the southeast of Xiamen Island. It is surrounded by the graceful sea and the Wulao Peaks behind the temple. During the last years of the Tang Dynasty, the monks who inhabited the temple had established it as a Buddhist sacred land. Throughout its history, it has been known by different names. In the first years of the Qing Dynasty, the General Shi Liang provided funds to rebuild the temple, where the Bodhisattva Guanyin was mainly worshipped. The General thought it was on the south of the Mount Putuo of Zhejiang Province, and so he assigned the temple its present name. In the year 1924, Hui Quan was appointed first abbot of the South Putuo President and other famous masters like Hong Yi and Yin shun used to teach here. (Photo by Ryan Pyle/Corbis via Getty Images)
