(Original Caption) Rubber Cocktail Lounge. When the Portage Hotel in Akron, Ohio opened its new rubber room cocktail lounge recently, visitors had their first glimpse of a room which is practically of all-rubber construction. They entered through a rubber door, walked on rubber tile, sat in settees and chairs that were upholstered in rubber, drinks were mixed at a rubber bar and served on a rubber-topped tables. The lighting fixtures consist of six automobile tires, mounted on disc wheels, which are suspended from the ceiling. Surrounding the walls are five large murals, done entirely in rubber, depicting scenes from the city's No. 1 industry. The Rubber Room was designed by architect Kenneth C. Welch, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, who not only succeeded in obtaining the desired novelty effect but also demonstrated many new and practical applications for products of the rubber in
