TEPCO Starts Removal Work Of Cover Over Damaged Fukushima Reactor Building

OKUMA, JAPAN - OCTOBER 22: Members of the Fukushima prefectural government's expert committee responsible for monitoring the reactor decommissioning effort at the plant, monitor an operation to make holes into a panel of a canopy covering the damaged No. 1 reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on October 22, 2014 in Okuma, Fukushima, Japan. After drilling into the 40-meter-by-7-meter panel, the workers sprayed synthetic, anti-scattering resin inside the building to minimize the possibility of radioactive substances being stirred up into the air. After dismantling the canopy, TEPCO plans to remove a large amount of the highly contaminated debris, rubble and dust that remain inside in fiscal 2016 and spent nuclear fuel rods stored in pools in fiscal 2017.
