In a picture taken on December 10, 2009 Chinese coal miners prepare to close the Changyuan mine, the last one in Chengdu to shut down in compliance with an official order, in southwest China's Sichuan province. All the coal mines in Chengdu, the captial of Sichuan province, have been officially ordered to shut down before December 15, to make the city completely free of the coal mining industry. The world's major emerging economies led by China are calling for a "binding" amendment to the Kyoto Protocol requiring rich countries to slash carbon pollution by more than 40 percent compared to 1990, according to a document seen by AFP. China, the world's biggest polluter, who relies on carbon-belching coal to generate about 70 percent of its soaring energy needs, has pledged to curb emissions per unit of gross domestic product by between 40 and 45 percent compared to 2005 levels.
